Love Still Makes the World Go Round: Gay Bombay’s Pride Month Meet

On Sunday, 7th June 2026, Gay Bombay hosted a special International Pride Month community meet, and the response was heartening.

Around 30 people attended the gathering, including 14 newcomers who were joining a Gay Bombay meet for the very first time. One question we are frequently asked is whether younger queer people attend our events. The answer is an emphatic yes. Around 10 to 14 attendees were from Gen Z, reflecting the growing diversity of ages within our community spaces.

For years there has been a misconception that Gay Bombay gatherings are attended only by older members of the community. While many long-time members continue to participate, today’s meet demonstrated once again that people of all generations are finding value in coming together, sharing experiences, and building connections.

As often happens when queer people gather in a safe space, the conversation eventually found its way to relationships.

The discussion covered everything from dating apps and hookup culture to the challenges of finding meaningful connections in a fast-paced digital world. Many attendees shared stories about their experiences on Grindr, online dating scams, disappointing encounters, and the difficulties of finding compatible partners.

Listening to these conversations was a reminder that while technology has transformed dramatically over the past few decades, many of the emotional challenges remain remarkably familiar. Those of us who have been attending Gay Bombay meets since the late 1990s recognised the same themes emerging again and again: the search for companionship, the fear of rejection, the excitement of new connections, and the hope of finding lasting love.

Several attendees had travelled from outside Mumbai to participate in the meet, adding new perspectives and experiences to the discussion. There were also heartfelt conversations about unrequited love, missed opportunities, and the emotional complexities that come with caring deeply for another person.

Without anyone planning it, the gathering gradually became a relationship-focused discussion. Perhaps that is because, regardless of age, background, or generation, love remains one of the most important forces shaping our lives.

The afternoon was made even more enjoyable by good food and good company. Samosas and cold drinks were served, while our friend Nesh delighted everyone by bringing delicious French-style crêpes. The thoughtful gesture was greatly appreciated and quickly became one of the highlights of the evening.

Although the formal meet concluded around 8 PM, very few people seemed eager to leave. Small groups continued chatting, exchanging stories, making new friends, and strengthening old connections. Conversations continued until around 9:30 PM, long after the official programme had ended.

In many ways, those extra hours of spontaneous interaction are often the true measure of a successful community gathering. People stayed because they wanted to stay.

As Pride Month continues, we also discussed upcoming Gay Bombay events. There is likely to be a Thane meet later this month, and of course, our Pride party is just around the corner next weekend.

If today’s gathering proved anything, it is that community still matters. Technology may change, apps may come and go, and generations may differ in how they communicate, but the desire for connection remains constant.

More than twenty-seven years after many of us first began attending these meets, one truth remains unchanged:

Love still makes the world go round.

Happy Pride Month from all of us at Gay Bombay. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.
