Guardian of love – Gaver Chhachhia

Gaver Chhachhia is the very first recipient of the GayBombay Rajshri Khote Guardian of Love Award! This award was introduced by Sachin Jain & Darpan Mehta. It was presented to her by Balachandran Ramiah, at the GayBombay Talent Show, during the Awards Section. It was held on September 21, 2025 at Mukkti Cultural Club, Andheri West, Mumbai.

This award carries the profound legacy of Rajshri Khote, affectionately known as Munni Pua, the beloved elder aunt of Harpreet Chhachhia. At a time when the queer community faced exclusion and rejection from public spaces, Munni Pua’s home became a sanctuary—a beacon of kindness, warmth, and unwavering acceptance. For 20 years, her doors were always open to GayBombay, where tea, samosas, and unconditional love created a family bound not by blood, but by compassion and solidarity.

Though she left us in March 2019, Munni Pua’s spirit endures in this award, a heartfelt tribute to the brave straight allies who stand as true guardians of love, offering their steadfast support to the queer community through every challenge and triumph.

The first-ever recipient of this award embodies the very spirit of courage and love that Rajshri Khote inspired — Gaver Chhachhia (She/Her), the courageous mother of Harpreet.

As a single parent who has been both mother and father to her children, Gaver’s journey is one of remarkable resilience and boundless, unconditional love. When her son came out as gay, *in 1991, when he was 16, *she welcomed him with an open heart and no judgment, embracing the kindness and truth she saw within him. With her home always open to friends from the community, she has stood proudly beside Harpreet at Pride marches, shared her voice on panels alongside other parents, and emerged as a fierce warrior mother fighting for all LGBTQ+ families.
